Let’s be honest when you’re considering a business partnership, hiring a key employee, or entering into a significant professional relationship, do you stop at their LinkedIn profile? I’m willing to bet most of us don’t.
We scroll through Instagram to see their lifestyle and values. We check Twitter/X for their real-time thoughts and reactions. We might even glance at Facebook to understand their personal connections and interests.
It’s not snooping it’s due diligence in an age where our digital footprints tell a more complete story than any resume ever could. Here’s what I’ve learned: People are multifaceted, and their various social media platforms often reveal different dimensions of who they are.
The polished professional on LinkedIn might be a passionate advocate on Twitter, a creative storyteller on Instagram, or a devoted community member on Facebook. I’m a firm believer in free speech and people’s right to express their authentic selves online. In fact, I respect when someone has the courage to share their genuine perspectives and positions publicly.
It shows authenticity, conviction, and transparency qualities I value in business relationships. But here’s the key: consistency matters. When someone’s values and character remain consistent across platforms, even if their tone or topics vary, that tells me they’re genuine.
It’s the misalignment between public personas that raises questions. My take: Don’t sanitize yourself across all platforms be authentic.
And don’t be surprised when others do their homework on the real you beyond your professional profile.
Question for the community: How do you balance authentic self-expression with professional considerations across your social media presence?
And yes do you research potential or current business associates beyond LinkedIn?
